This classic four-square residence sits mid-block alongside a cohesive mix of houses that share a
common theme of gracious yet simple details, large front porches and welcoming proportions. An
insertion of a current lifestyle focused on entertaining into a classically styled shell continues the
contextual rhythm of the neighborhood while allowing for a modern intervention in the rear.
Abundance of natural light, visual flow of entertaining spaces, a connection to exterior living and a light
channeling stair drove the program. The architectural dialog to address theseattributes consists of
shifting planes and volumes of various transparencies thatinform the spaces. Both a horizontal and
vertical spine create a visual and spatial connection from the interior to the exterior as well as to each
level. An undulating screen wall on the main floor creates an axis for circulation and acts as a
transparent division of spaces. The screen floats through the house and penetrates to the exterior
connecting to the resort vibe out back. The staircase pulls light into the house while physically and
visually accessing each level. When you approach from the front, you see the house as it was intended
to fit into the streetscape, yet with a more simplified sensibility hinting at the modern volumes and
spaces you encounter throughout the house.
