The first step of this project was to remove the haphazard additions and retain the original vernacular farmhouse. While the interior spaces had low ceilings with small windows the views to the mountains beyond and river below beckoned the house to be opened up to the outdoors, both spatially and visually. In order to keep the existing house as the primary element upon the approach and to not overpower the simple elegance, two new wings were added to the rear of the house, using the same materials and proportions as the historical house. After you enter into the humble and cozy original rooms, you pass into the new spaces, with taller ceilings, large view framing windows, and flexible spaces that open directly to the outdoors via an elevated screen porch and a tiered deck.
